Martial Arts in Marin

Ages 12–17

Teens

You want your teen to train with other teens, not thrown in with adults, guided by principled role models who live the values they teach. We hold a standard built on three things: Competence (their skills), Character (who they are), and Contribution (what they do).

PMA has the most comprehensive teen program in Marin, with a true beginner class for those with little to no experience and an intermediate/advanced class as they progress toward the adult program. We're the only dojo that doesn't put teens in with adults until they're ready.

FAQ

Teen Classes

What ages are in the teen program?

Our teen classes serve ages 12–17, with beginner and intermediate/advanced groups so teens train with peers at a similar level.

My teen is very athletic. Will this suit them?

Absolutely. All of our programs allow for various levels of athleticism to have their needs met. Our contact oriented style is great for super athletic teens.

My teen is shy and not very athletic. Will they fit in?

Absolutely. Our coaches specialize in meeting teens where they are. The structured, supportive environment is exactly where shy or less-athletic teens tend to flourish.

How does martial arts help with stress and confidence?

Training gives teens a healthy outlet and concrete tools to stay calm under pressure. Earning skills and progressing builds real, lasting confidence, on and off the mat.

How long is the (kids, teens, Lil Dragons) program?

Our programs are ongoing and you start at any time. Typically kids move up through their belts roughly every four months if they are training 2-3 times per week and learning the skills taught in class.

Can my caregiver bring my child/teen to the free intro?

No, we require an actual parent attend the free intro. This way you get to see firsthand what your child is learning and we can connect directly vs through someone else. Once your child is enrolled a caregiver may bring them to classes.

How is PMA different from other dojos?

Practical Martial Arts was founded in 1993 with the idea that blending styles is the most effective for self defense. At that time MMA was in its infancy and PMA was the first in Marin to offer this type of training. In fact, ask almost any dojo owner in Marin and they will tell you that at some point they trained at PMA. Between Mike's 50 years of training and Karen's 25 years in martial arts and background as a credentialed school teacher, PMA's curriculum is carefully researched and crafted to provide every student not only technical skills but the ability to be strong in difficult situations.
