FAQ

Adult Classes

Do I need any experience to start the adult program?

None at all. Many people walk in with zero background. Beginners are paired with patient training partners and coaches who break everything down step by step.

What should I wear to my first class?

For your first session, comfortable athletic long pants without zippers are fine. You'll eventually need a gi &/or boxing gloves, but you can start with loaners. When you decide, “yes, this is awesome!”, you can purchase a gi and gloves in our dojo.

Is the adult program good for fitness, or just self-defense?

Both. Our classes deliver a serious full-body workout that builds strength, conditioning, and mobility while teaching you practical, real-world skills you'll actually retain.

How often should I train?

Two to three classes a week is a great starting rhythm. Keep in mind that the more you train the quicker you learn & make gains!

Do I have to do the free class?

Yes. The introductory class is important so that you have a commitment-free opportunity to try our program, and so that we can be sure we match you with the right classes.

Will I get hit or forced to spar right away?

No. New students focus on basic techniques and partner drills without full-contact sparring in grappling or kickboxing until they're ready.

How is PMA different from other dojos?

Practical Martial Arts was founded in 1993 with the idea that blending styles is the most effective for self defense. At that time MMA was in its infancy and PMA was the first in Marin to offer this type of training. In fact, ask almost any dojo owner in Marin and they will tell you that at some point they trained at PMA. Between Mike's 50 years of training and Karen's 25 years in martial arts and background as a credentialed school teacher, PMA's curriculum is carefully researched and crafted to provide every student not only technical skills but the ability to be strong in difficult situations.
